Did you know that every September 16 since 1994 Worldwide celebrated " The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer "? In General Assembly held by the United Nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer .
According to the Official Website in http://www.un.org/es/events/ozoneday/ invites all States to devote the World Day to promote activities related to the objectives of the Protocol and its amendments . (1)
Recall that the removal of controlled uses of ozone-depleting substances and related reductions have not only helped to protect the ozone layer for the current generation and those to come , but have also greatly contributed to the global efforts aimed at addressing climate change .
Let's make a summary of the Ozone Layer . Ozone is known to the Earth's stratosphere zone containing a relatively high concentration of ozone. This layer , which extends approximately 15 km to 50 km altitude , meets 90% of the ozone in the atmosphere and absorbs 97% to 99 % of ultraviolet radiation of high frequency. (2)
The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson . Its properties were examined in detail by the British meteorologist GMB Dobson , who developed a sencilloespectrofotómetro that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground .
Ozone acts as a filter, or shield from harmful radiation and high energy reaching the Earth allowing others to pass as long wave ultraviolet , which thus reaches the surface . This ultraviolet radiation is that which allows the life on the planet , as it is allowed to perform the photosynthesis of the plant kingdom , located at the base of the trophic pyramid .
Therefore, in conclusion, the highest authorities of our planet , have determined that implements a specific day to remember that we must protect and care for our planet being in harmony with our environment .
The question we all must ask ourselves is whether are we really concerned with taking care of our environment by not using the pollutants mentioned Protocol ? A response that each of us must answer . Our Blog Science and Geophysics adds to this conclusion that is reflected worldwide .
