GEOPHYSICS - GEOPHYSICAL CHARACTER

"The continental crust is one of two types of crust on Earth, the other being the oceanic crust. The continents and their continental shelves are composed of continental crust." - Wikipedia

In the history of the great researchers on earth science highlight several characters who contributed to the investigation of the various natural phenomena that address our planet in areas of seismology, tectonophysics, meteorology and vulcanology, all within the field of study geophysics.

Alfred Wegener is no exception to this illustrious group of exemplary figures who contributed their knowledge in the areas of meteorology and tectonophysics today, because with their old assumptions about continental drift echoes still give today. Several people categorized as one of the fathers of geology, thanks to his hypothesis of continental drift as it investigated and analyzed the fossilized remains of the basins and coastal areas some continents and concluded that they had a great similarity in their samples.

This would lead you to think that once the current continents were not separated, but on the contrary, held together, but due to the dynamism of the Earth and the strong convection currents fragmented the continental area and moving away from each other up view current form they have our continents.

Alfred Wegener had that vision.

Nation in Berlin, Germany, in 1880, was a meteorologist and geophysicist, where he proposed the theory of continental drift. He received his doctorate in astronomy from the University of Berlin, but their field of study focused on geophysics and meteorology. (1)

The weather had a strong effect in those times, pure mathematics was practiced, and it was one of the current branches of contemporary geophysics at the time. She focused her knowledge studying meteorology air circulation in the polar regions through expeditions to Greenland.

In its heyday in the study of geophysics she had to abandon a while due to the First World War. Fortunately its hard warfare army quickly and he was wounded in combat. But thanks to their knowledge in Meteorology, in the military had to be traveling around Germany visiting the different weather stations. (1)

But his dedication to Geophysics, led him to give lectures at the University of Graz in Austria. It is clear teaching Meteorology.

Wegener built the first weather station in Greenland, Danmarkshavn. (1)
Some things were left us his book Alfred Wegener Thermodynamics of the atmosphere between 1909 and 1910, his first public ideas on continental drift, his work on the origin of continents and oceans, also published about 20 meteorological and geophysical work. He also worked on the book Climates of the geological past.

Some awards which were presented in his honor were the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, was given to a crater on Mars Wegener and Wegener peninsula near Ummannaq in Greenland, where he died on November 2, 1930 .
